Appendix D. The Schools

Richmond Hill Public School (Common School)

The first formal school in Richmond Hill, the Common School, was organized under Benjamin Barnard in 1816. No complete records have been found to identify the teachers who followed Barnard after 1821, but from about 1851 the records are fairly reliable.

The Headmaster taught on his own until 1861 when he was joined by a female assistant. In fact, only two women served as headmaster/principal up until 1930: Miss E. A. Spragge from 1888 to 1894, and Miss Mary Duncan, substituting in September 1897 and April 1898 for J. W. Forhan.

The school population continued to grow, so that by 1873, two assistants were required, and in 1879 a third was taken on. About 1880 to 1882 the School Board attempted to keep expenses down by cutting back to two assistants but finally acknowledged the need for a third in 1883.

For nearly a decade between 1915 and 1924 there was a continual turnover of staff mid-year, but under principal Walter Scott a more stable core group of teachers was established. The backbone of this group of teachers was Mrs. M. L. McConaghy, who first joined the staff in 1906. Mrs. Mary Wiley had given a similar stability to the teaching staff from 1878 to 1905.

Richmond Hill High School (Grammar School)

Richmond Hill High School (Grammar School) was first established beside the Common School in 1853 under William Clark. By 1869, Headmaster A. M. Lafferty required an assistant. Except for a brief period in 1883 and 1884, the headmaster and his assistant managed to meet the needs of the senior students until 1903.

In 1873 a new high school was built in front of the Common School. This high school burned down, however, on December 23, 1896, and was subsequently re-built in 1897 on the property at the corner of Yonge and Wright Streets. Increasing enrollment and lack of space in the existing high school in the early 1920s prompted the opening of a new school farther along Wright Street on December 5, 1924.

Jefferson School

The northern area of the community was primarily served by Jefferson Common School, a joint school section serving Markham and Vaughan. It was a one-room, one-teacher school from the 1840s to the 1940s when space at St. Johns Anglican Church was required to accomodate all the students. The first school house, built of logs, was on the west side of Yonge Street just north of Gamble Road. In 1868, a brick school was built across the road. Names of the teachers from the 1840s to 1861 are largely unknown.

Headford School

The southeast corner of Richmond Hill was served by the Headford School on Lot 17, Concession 2, Markham. This also was a one-room, one-teacher school, and like Jefferson, the first school was replaced by a larger one. The new Headford School was of scissor-truss frame, built in 1874, and similar in construction to the German Mills School in Markham.

The early teachers at Headford have still not been identified.

School Section #4 Markham

School Section #4 Markham was located at the southwest corner of Lot 26, Concession 3, Markham (i.e., the northeast corner of Elgin Mills Road and the current Leslie Street), and accommodated children from the northeast part of Richmond Hill. It is believed to have been moved to be used as a farm building on Lot 25, Concession 3, and was demolished in 1990. Early records are sparse.

Temperanceville and Oak Ridges Schools

Even more sparse are the records for Temperanceville and Oak Ridges schools. Confusion is increased by the occasional reference to Jefferson School as the school at Oak Ridges.

We do know that the Love family sold 1/4 acre to the trustees of School Section #21 at Temperanceville in 1857. In 1879, a new school was built, and in the 20th century it was raised on a high basement, and brick-clad. The 1879 belfry remained on the school, however, until the building was demolished in the late 1980s.

Also in 1857, the Hon. Robert Baldwin granted a small parcel on Yonge Street to school trustees. This parcel was enlarged when Thomas Legge sold a further 1/4 acre to the Trustees of Union School Section #1 in 1874. The current Oak Ridges School was built in 1914.

Only a few names and dates have come to light.
